We met at noon on Saturday and headed to an area near the Hudson River. The rain from the last few days left the ground muddy and water flowing down the hills that surround the Academy. Over the next five hours the team accepted every challenge with enthusiasm despite their lack of sleep. Their spirits were high, and each task was performed to the best of their ability. My biggest challenge was not to motivate them…far from it. The tough part was convincing them to back off when I felt that they were exhausted and needed a moment to collect their thoughts. These are exceptional people. We ran the hills with loaded rucks, lifted logs, did hundreds of ab movements, push-up and pull-up reps, pulled & pushed a vehicle uphill, hauled water cans up a wall with ropes and buddy carried each other. No complaints, just a “let’s go!” The amazing part is that there are 4000 just like them at USMA.
